This kakesuzuri style ship’s chest, or funa dansu, was locked when the client purchased it at auction.
the original lock plate had a missing ring pull so one was added during the restoration 
the small secret box often found behind the interior drawers was missing so I made one
I removed the lock to access the interior wherein I found two original keys. The secret box found behind the lower interior drawers was missing, so I fashioned one out of kiri. All locks were cleaned and re-affixed.
bug damage 
Blotches in the original finish were in-stained to match and a final coat of wax thereafter
There was some bug damage and wood restoration needed for a chest this old, circa 1850-1880, but it is a fine specimen of tansu craftsmanship.
